Narrow Escape: School Bus Erupts in Flames in Kings Park, Forcing Three Children to Flee

KINGS PARK, WESTERN SYDNEY — A routine afternoon school run turned into a scene of terror on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, when a school bus burst into flames on a residential street in Sydney’s West. Three students and the driver were forced to make a life-saving exit just moments before the vehicle was completely consumed by an intense inferno.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 PM on Cobham Street in Kings Park. Witnesses described hearing a series of "loud bangs" followed by thick, acrid black smoke pouring from the rear of the bus.

Within minutes, the engine compartment was fully engulfed, with flames quickly spreading through the cabin. Dramatic footage captured by local residents shows the fire ripping through the roof of the vehicle, sending plumes of smoke visible from several kilometers away in Blacktown and Marayong.

Transport for NSW confirmed that three students were on board at the time. The driver, alerted to the smoke in the rearview mirror, acted immediately—pulling the bus to the curb and ensuring all children evacuated safely before the fire took hold of the passenger seating area.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the blaze. Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews from Blacktown and Seven Hills arrived on the scene shortly after 3:00 PM and worked for approximately 40 minutes to fully extinguish the fire. Despite their efforts, the intense heat and flames ensured the bus was declared a total loss.

While a formal investigation by Transport for NSW is underway, preliminary assessments by NSW Police suggest the fire was sparked by a mechanical fault in the engine bay.

The incident has reignited local concerns regarding the age and maintenance of the regional bus fleet. This is the latest in a series of vehicle fires across Sydney’s transport network in 2026, prompting calls from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) for a comprehensive safety audit.

"It’s a miracle the driver saw the smoke when he did," said one local resident who witnessed the evacuation. "Another sixty seconds and those kids might not have made it off. The whole thing just went up like a tinderbox."

Cobham Street remained closed for several hours as specialist crews worked to clear the charred wreckage and manage a minor fuel spill. Replacement services were organized for students on the affected route, and Transport for NSW has promised a full report on the vehicle’s service history.
