Night of Gunfire: Five Wounded in Two Separate Shooting Sprees Across Central Athens

ATHENS – A wave of violence swept through the heart of the Greek capital on Tuesday evening, April 28, 2026, leaving five people hospitalized following two separate shooting incidents. The back-to-back attacks, occurring in the high-traffic districts of Kypseli and Victoria Square, have placed the Hellenic Police on high alert and sparked renewed concerns over public safety in central urban hubs.

The evening of gunfire began shortly after 8:00 PM, turning residential streets into crime scenes and forcing bystanders to scramble for cover.

The first incident unfolded in the densely populated neighborhood of Kypseli. Witnesses reported that gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire near a crowded intersection before speeding away through the narrow side streets.

Three individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the volley and were rushed by EKAV ambulances to the Gennimatas General Hospital. Although their conditions remain serious, medical staffs have indicated that all three victims are currently stable. At the scene, police recovered several shell casings from the pavement, with preliminary evidence suggesting the use of a semi-automatic handgun.

Less than two hours later, as police were still cordoning off the first scene, a second shooting erupted near Victoria Square, a major transit and social hub.

Two men were discovered with gunshot wounds to their lower limbs, with preliminary reports suggesting they were targeted during a dispute between rival groups. The shooting sparked widespread panic in the area, a bustling hub known for its cafes and metro proximity, as evening commuters and diners fled for safety when the shots rang out.

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) have launched a massive coordinated operation to track the assailants. Security cordons remained in place throughout the night as forensic teams analyzed ballistic evidence and gathered CCTV footage from local businesses.

"We are examining all possibilities, including whether these two incidents are linked or represent separate criminal disputes," a police spokesperson stated. "Our priority is restoring a sense of security to the residents of Central Athens."

Investigators are currently focused on two primary leads to resolve the case. Authorities are conducting ballistic analysis and reviewing surveillance footage to determine if the same motorcycle or specific weapon signatures link the two crime scenes. While the investigation remains in its early stages, police are strongly considering a motive involving a "settling of accounts" between rival organized groups.

The shootings come amidst a period of heightened sensitivity regarding urban crime in Athens. Local community leaders have expressed mounting frustration, calling for an increased permanent police presence in the central districts to deter such brazen displays of violence.

As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made, and the search for the suspects continues. The victims remain under police guard at the hospital as investigators wait to conduct formal interviews.
