OSCE Nations Agree on First Budget in Five Years, Make Cuts Demanded by US

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a 57-nation east-west body, has approved its first budget in five years, implementing significant budget cuts as requested by the United States. Diplomats reported a reduction of approximately 15 million euros ($17 million), or about 10% of the 2021 budget, which will affect staffing levels significantly.

OSCE Nations Agree on First Budget in Five Years, Make Cuts Demanded by US

On March 19, 2026, representatives from the OSCE convened to unanimously approve a budget for the first time since 2021. This decision comes amid years of stalemate sparked by opposing views, particularly from Russia, which argued that the organization had grown too influenced by Western nations.

The United States had been pressing for reforms and financial reductions, expressing that it might withdraw from the organization unless it aligned more closely with its core missions. The budget approved includes cuts that total around 10% from the previous budget, aiming to increase operational efficiency while acknowledging the need for sustainable funding and long-term impact.

"The budget will preserve the Organization's operational effectiveness, while recognising the need for reforms," the OSCE stated following the meeting. It is anticipated that these cuts could result in the loss of more than 100 staff members out of a total of approximately 2,000.

Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, who presides over this year’s OSCE chairmanship, highlighted that these developments underscore the organization’s role as a vital dialogue platform during challenging geopolitical times.
