People in UK Spend Fewer Years in Good Health Than a Decade Ago, Study Finds

According to new data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the healthy life expectancy in the UK has witnessed a marked decline, with individuals spending fewer years in good health compared to a decade ago. The findings indicate that women born between 2022 and 2024 are expected to enjoy only 60.9 years of good health, down from 63.4 years in 2019-2021, while men are predicted to live 60.7 years in good health, a fall from 62.4 years.

These figures represent the lowest levels of healthy life expectancy since the ONS began tracking this data in 2011. The decrease in healthy years is coupled with a widening gap in health disparities among different regions in England. For instance, residents of Richmond upon Thames can expect to live significantly longer in good health compared to those in areas like Hartlepool.

The gap in healthy life expectancy between the wealthiest and poorest areas has increased sharply over the last decade, with women in rich regions living almost 19 years longer in good health than their counterparts in economically disadvantaged areas. For men, the disparity is over 18 years. Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The ONS attributes part of the decline to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has contributed to increased mortality and a general decline in health outcomes. While overall life expectancy has seen slight improvements since the pandemic's peak, the quality of life during those years has diminished. Recommended Actions

Public health experts are calling for immediate reforms to address these inequalities. Dr. Jamie O'Halloran from the Institute for Public Policy Research emphasized that to halt this trend, we must look beyond healthcare systems and address broader societal factors—such as housing, income, and access to healthy food—that significantly influence overall well-being.

The Royal Society for Public Health reinforced the need for a renewed commitment to public health initiatives that target disparities in health, ensuring that all individuals have access to necessary resources for a healthier and longer life.

This alarming trend highlights the necessity for comprehensive strategies and investments aimed at improving health outcomes, especially for those in the most vulnerable communities across the UK.
