LONDON, May 6, 2026: Authorities have launched an investigation into a suspected arson attack on a former synagogue located on Nelson Street in Whitechapel, following increasing concerns about antisemitic violence in the region. Fire crews responded to the incident shortly before 5 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving reports of a fire, which caused minor damage to the building's gates and lock.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that CCTV footage indicates the fire was deliberately set. Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke emphasized the seriousness with which the police are treating the incident, stating, “We will work closely with colleagues from Counter Terrorism Policing to support the investigation.”

This attack occurs amidst a wave of violence targeting Jewish sites across London in recent weeks, heightening fears within the Jewish community. Notably, just last week, two Jewish men were stabbed in a conflict regarded as an act of terrorism. The police are actively exploring potential connections between these incidents.

The former synagogue has not been operational since 2020 and was slated for sale, with plans from a Muslim group to convert it into a mosque and community center. Leon Silver, president of the former synagogue, expressed shock and concern at the attack, linking the rising tensions to broader geopolitical events.

Local MP Rushanara Ali communicated her support for the Jewish community, reinforcing that all forms of hate crimes will not be tolerated. The Prime Minister is also addressing the surge in antisemitic sentiment, affirming that the government is committed to combating such violence and fostering safety for all communities.
