UJJAIN, India – A massive emergency operation is currently underway in Jhalaria village, where a two-and-a-half-year-old boy named Bhagirath fell into an uncovered borewell late on Thursday evening, April 9, 2026. The child, who is believed to be trapped at a depth of approximately 70 to 75 feet, has become the focus of a desperate, multi-agency rescue mission that has gripped the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time while the child’s family, a group of shepherds from Rajasthan’s Pali district, were grazing their sheep in a local field. According to eyewitnesses, the toddler accidentally dislodged a stone covering the opening of the 200-foot-deep shaft and fell in while playing.

The rescue operation, involving the National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF and SDRF), has faced severe delays due to the region's unforgiving geography. Teams digging a parallel relief pit were halted at the 40-foot mark by dense rocky terrain, necessitating the transport of specialized heavy drilling machinery from Indore and Bhopal.

The mission is further complicated by intermittent boulders within the shaft that threaten the stability of rescue equipment, while the confirmed presence of water at the lower levels has heightened the urgency to reach the child before conditions deteriorate further.

Despite the depth, authorities have maintained a continuous line of support to the child. A specialized borewell camera has been lowered to monitor Bhagirath’s movements, while a steady supply of oxygen is being pumped into the shaft through a dedicated pipe.

Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh and Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma are currently at the site, overseeing more than 200 personnel and a fleet of JCB and Poclain excavators working under floodlights.

"Every second counts," Collector Singh stated from the command center. "The rocky layers are our biggest hurdle, but we are utilizing every resource available—including hammer machines—to reach him as safely and quickly as possible."

The village of Jhalaria has been transformed into a vigil site, with hundreds of residents gathered to support the family. Bhagirath’s mother, who was with him at the time of the fall, remains at the mouth of the borewell, while his father is reportedly traveling from Rajasthan to join the efforts.

The rescue mission has entered a critical phase as crews focus on parallel pit progress, aiming to begin a horizontal connecting tunnel once vertical excavation hits the 75-foot mark. To ensure a rapid response upon extrication, the child’s health status is being monitored around the clock, with specialized medical teams and two fully equipped ambulances stationed on-site for immediate stabilization and transport.
