Russia Hits Kyiv with Drones and Ballistic Missiles, Killing 1 and Injuring 33

In a coordinated assault, Kyiv became the focal point of a significant attack involving both drones and ballistic missiles launched by Russia in the early hours of May 13, 2026. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that one person was killed while 33 were injured, with the fallout primarily affecting residential areas and critical infrastructure.

The Ukrainian Air Force indicated that their defenses successfully shot down or jammed a total of 693 targets, comprising 41 missiles and 652 drones. However, 15 missiles and 23 drones managed to strike various locations in Kyiv, while debris from downed drones affected 18 additional sites.

This wave of attacks follows a rare daytime barrage on Wednesday, which also targeted multiple regions of Ukraine and resulted in significant damage and other casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the attacks, pointing out that they demonstrated Russia's resolute intent to prolong conflict despite international hopes for peace.

The impact of the assault was particularly severe in the Darnytsia district, where a multistory residential building partially collapsed, trapping individuals under the rubble. Efforts to rescue residents are ongoing, with at least 27 people reported to have been rescued from the debris.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko reported damages across several districts in Kyiv, emphasizing the threat posed to civilian life and infrastructure. The attacks also extended to other cities, including Kremenchuk, Bila Tserkva, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Odesa.

Zelenskyy called for increased international support, particularly in bolstering Ukraine's air defense capabilities, as the frequency and intensity of Russian strikes continue to escalate. The situation remains critically tense, with ongoing assessments of damage and injuries as recovery efforts proceed.
