Sabastian Sawe Breaks Fabled 2-Hour Barrier in the Marathon to Shatter World Record by 65 Seconds

In an extraordinary achievement, Sabastian Sawe of Kenya has officially shattered the 2-hour barrier in marathon running, winning the London Marathon with a groundbreaking time of 1:59:30. This unprecedented victory marks Sawe as the first athlete to complete a marathon in under two hours during a recognized race, breaking the previous world record held by Kelvin Kiptum.

Sawe's performance was remarkable not just for the record, but for the way he executed the race. Running the second half of the marathon in an impressive 59 minutes and 1 second, he pulled ahead decisively after 30 kilometers, ultimately leading to his commanding finish on The Mall amidst roaring cheers from the crowd.

Following closely was Yomif Kejelcha from Ethiopia, who finished second in 1:59:41, also dipping under the 2-hour mark in his first marathon. Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda secured third place, setting a new record time of 2:00:28, also surpassing the previous world record.

Sawe expressed gratitude toward the enthusiastic crowds, emphasizing, "What comes today is not for me alone, but for all of us today in London." The atmosphere was electric, as onlookers celebrated this historic moment in sports.

Notably, the women’s race was not without its own history. Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia won with a time of 2:15:41, the fastest ever in a women’s-only marathon, although it fell short of the mixed-race course record set by Paula Radcliffe in 2003.

This day marks a significant milestone not just for Sawe but for marathon running as a whole, pushing the boundaries of human achievement and exciting spectators worldwide. The previous attempts to break the 2-hour mark in official settings had remained elusive, despite Eliud Kipchoge’s landmark run in 2019, which was not recognized as an official record due to the conditions under which it was achieved.

As the marathon world shifts with this latest development, it remains inspired by the limitless possibilities of human endurance.
