KYIV OBLAST, Ukraine – Residential areas on the outskirts of the capital became the front line once again as Russian forces launched a massive wave of 142 drones across Ukraine overnight on April 20, 2026. In the Brovary district of Kyiv Oblast, a direct hit from a strike UAV leveled a private home, leaving a 51-year-old man hospitalized with significant injuries.
The attack began in the early hours of Monday morning, triggering air raid sirens across Kyiv twice in a single night. While the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that 113 of the incoming drones—a mix of "Shahed" models and newer "Gerbera" and "Italmas" variants—were intercepted, several breached regional defenses.
In the Brovary district, located just 20 kilometers from the capital, the sound of an approaching engine was followed by a massive detonation that tore through a residential street.
"Peaceful people, our homes, and our ordinary life are in the crosshairs," said Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration. "A man born in 1974 has been hospitalized. All necessary medical assistance is being provided."
Emergency crews from the State Emergency Service (SES) worked through the night to extinguish a blaze that threatened to spread to neighboring properties. At least two private houses were severely damaged or destroyed in this specific sector.
The strike on Kyiv was part of a broader, coordinated offensive targeting civilian and energy infrastructure throughout northern, southern, and eastern Ukraine. In Kharkiv Oblast, a drone hit an apartment building in Velykyi Burluk, injuring three residents, while Mykolaiv suffered extensive damage to high-rises, homes, and public transit tracks. Similar devastation was reported in Kryvyi Rih, where local officials confirmed hits on both critical infrastructure and residential towers.
Despite the persistent aerial threat, Kyiv residents have adapted to a "new normal" of nightly sirens. However, the introduction of jet-powered drone variants and cheaper "decoy" drones like the Gerbera has complicated air defense efforts, requiring mobile fire groups to remain on constant alert.
As cleanup operations continue in Brovary, the wreckage of the downed drones is being collected for forensic analysis by the military to track the evolution of Russia’s unmanned arsenal.
