Spain Breaks Ranks: Madrid Rejects U.S. Push for NATO Intervention in Strait of Hormuz

BRUSSELS – The transatlantic alliance faced one of its most severe fractures in decades this week as Spain forcefully rejected a U.S.-led push for NATO to deploy a maritime strike force to the Strait of Hormuz. The move by Madrid, which includes a ban on U.S. aircraft using Spanish bases for the conflict, marks a significant act of defiance against Washington’s "ultimatum" to its European allies.

The standoff comes as President Donald Trump warned that NATO members face a "very bad future" if they fail to provide military support to reopen the strategic waterway, which has been de facto blocked by Iran since the outbreak of hostilities in late February.

In a sharp address from the El Goloso military base, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles made Madrid's position clear, labeling the current military campaign against Iran "illegal" and "senseless."

"Spain will never accept stopgap measures because the objective must be for the war to end, and for it to end now," Robles stated. "We mustn’t do anything that would add even more tension or cause the situation to escalate further."

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has framed the resistance under the slogan "No to War," drawing direct parallels to the 2003 opposition to the Iraq invasion. Spain has already closed its airspace to U.S. refueling and fighter aircraft involved in the Iran campaign, forcing a logistical reshuffle of U.S. assets at the Rota and Morón bases.

The dispute has widened a growing rift within the alliance. While some members like France and the UK have explored "defensive" maritime options, they remain wary of being drawn into an offensive campaign. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also signaled a retreat from initial support, echoing the sentiment that the conflict is "not Europe's war."

The U.S. response to Madrid's defiance has been swift and stinging, signaling a major diplomatic crisis. The White House has hinted at potential trade embargoes against "intransigent" allies, while reports suggest the Pentagon is compiling a list of countries—with Spain firmly in the spotlight—targeted for retaliatory troop withdrawals.

Underpinning these threats is a deep frustration among U.S. officials, who argue that the primary beneficiaries of the Strait's oil flow are unfairly refusing to contribute to the high costs of its security.

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes, has sent global energy prices soaring. While the U.S. argues that a NATO presence is the only way to break the blockade, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares argued in Brussels that economic considerations should not override international law.

The tension is further exacerbated by recent incidents in the region, including drone strikes on energy infrastructure and attacks on UN peacekeeping units in Lebanon, where Spanish troops are currently deployed.

As NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte attempts to broker a compromise, the alliance's "all for one" principle is under its greatest stress test since the Cold War. For Spain, the refusal is a matter of principle and sovereignty; for Washington, it is a betrayal of the collective security framework.

With Iran recently announcing a further restriction of traffic to just 15 vessels per day, the clock is ticking on a diplomatic solution before the energy crisis triggers a global recession.
