KHERSON/ZAPORIZHZHIA, UKRAINE – A fresh wave of aerial assaults has left a trail of civilian casualties across southern Ukraine this Sunday morning, as Russian forces intensified their use of strike drones and guided aerial bombs against non-military targets.

At approximately 7:00 a.m. local time on April 19, 2026, the southern front witnessed a series of coordinated strikes that local officials are characterizing as deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and transport.

In Kherson, a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) targeted a civilian vehicle in a residential district, killing a 56-year-old man instantly and leaving a 41-year-old passenger with significant injuries.

The Kherson Regional Prosecutor's Office has launched a war crimes investigation under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, citing the "premeditated targeting of a civilian vehicle." This strike is part of a harrowing week characterized by "human safari" tactics, with local residents reporting that drones are actively hunting individual cars and pedestrians throughout the city's streets.

Simultaneously, the village of Balabyne in the Zaporizhzhia region was rocked by a triple strike involving guided aerial bombs (KABs), a high-precision weapon that has become a staple of recent Russian offensive maneuvers.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, confirmed that three women—aged 59, 63, and 85—were wounded during the triple bombing. While the victims are currently receiving outpatient treatment, the physical toll on the community is extensive.

The explosions caused heavy damage to several private residences, destroyed multiple garages, and incinerated nearby vehicles, leaving significant destruction in their wake.

The attacks in the south were part of a larger, country-wide escalation. Earlier this morning, a 16-year-old boy was killed during a drone strike in the northern Chernihiv region, where seven homes were leveled.

Despite the loss of life, the Ukrainian Air Force reported a high interception rate for the morning's barrage, successfully downing 203 out of 236 drones launched overnight. However, the 32 UAVs that penetrated defenses managed to hit targets across 18 different locations, underscoring the ongoing challenge of defending a vast frontline.

In an apparent direct response to the persistent targeting of civilian centers, Ukrainian forces launched a series of high-precision retaliatory strikes overnight. Reports indicate that Ukrainian missiles struck the Atlant-Aero plant in Taganrog, Russia, a key facility responsible for manufacturing the "Molniya" and "Orion" drones utilized in the recent southern attacks.

Beyond the manufacturing site, additional strikes targeted critical logistics, hitting an ammunition depot in occupied Trudove and fuel storage tanks near Novopoltavka, both located within the Zaporizhzhia region.
