Terror at Grand Central: Elderly Man Hospitalized After Knife Attack at Shopping Hub

TOOWOOMBA — Panic gripped the heart of the city this afternoon as shoppers fled for safety during a violent knife attack at Grand Central Shopping Centre. An elderly man has been rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, and two others were assessed by paramedics following the harrowing encounter.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 PM on Friday, May 8, 2026. Witnesses describe a scene of sudden chaos in the busy food court area when a man, reportedly armed with a large knife, began shouting before targeting an elderly patron.

Shoppers reported hearing screams as people scrambled to evacuate the building or take cover inside retail stores. "It was pure bedlam," said one witness who was eating lunch nearby. "One-minute people were just shopping, and the next, everyone was running for the exits. I saw a man on the ground and security rushing toward the commotion."

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) arrived on the scene within minutes. Paramedics treated an elderly man, believed to be in his 70s, for a significant wound to his upper body. He was stabilized at the scene before being transported to Toowoomba Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two other individuals—a woman in her 30s and a teenage retail worker—were assessed by medical teams for shock and minor abrasions sustained during the rush to exit the mall. Neither required hospitalization.

The Queensland Police Service confirmed that a 24-year-old man was apprehended by center security and responding officers shortly after the attack. The suspect was tasered during the arrest and has been taken into police custody for questioning.

A large section of the Grand Central Shopping Centre remained cordoned off this afternoon as a crime scene. Forensic officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing dozens of witnesses to determine a motive for the unprovoked attack.

The shopping center was partially evacuated following the incident, though management has since confirmed that the facility is secure. "The safety of our customers and staff is our absolute priority," a Grand Central spokesperson said in a brief statement. "We are working closely with the police in their investigation."

Police have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public, but they are urging anyone with mobile phone footage of the incident to come forward.
