Tesla Recalls Cybertruck Because Wheels May Fall Off

Tesla has announced a recall of 173 units of its Cybertruck due to a serious safety concern that could result in the wheels detaching from the vehicle. According to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem stems from potential cracking in the brake rotor stud holes, which can allow for separation from the wheel hub.

The affected vehicles include the RWD Long Range models equipped with the optional 18-inch steel wheels. The NHTSA explained that cracks in the rotor studs could cause vibrations and abnormal noises, potentially leading to the wheel completely disengaging from the truck.

Tesla stated that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities attributed to this issue but has received three warranty claims related to the problem. In efforts to ensure customer safety, the company will replace the affected wheel hubs and rotors free of charge, as mandated by U.S. law.

Since its debut in 2023, the Cybertruck has faced numerous challenges, including relatively low sales figures; only about 3,500 units were sold in recent months, far short of initial projections. The model has also endured several recalls addressing various technical issues, including accelerator pedal concerns and malfunctioning features.

Despite earlier promises of advanced engineering and robust safety ratings, the ongoing recalls have contributed to skepticism around the vehicle's capabilities. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had previously touted the Cybertruck as a groundbreaking vehicle, drawing comparisons to futuristic technology.

The company now aims to rectify these issues and restore consumer confidence as it moves forward in a competitive electric vehicle market. The voluntary recall emphasizes Tesla's commitment to safety, striving to uphold its reputation amid ongoing scrutiny. Owners of the affected trucks are encouraged to contact Tesla customer service for further instructions on the recall process.
