YENAGOA, BAYELSA — The Nigerian medical community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Dr. Ere Ogbachi, a dedicated medical practitioner who died early Tuesday morning, April 14, 2026, shortly after giving birth to a set of triplets.
Dr. Ogbachi, who served as a Registrar at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) in Okolobiri, successfully delivered three healthy infants at the facility. However, the joy of the successful delivery was short-lived as she developed severe medical complications within hours of the birth.
Her brother, Meshack Sintei, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement on Wednesday. He recounted how the family watched in despair as the medical team at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, fought tirelessly to stabilize her.
As her condition deteriorated rapidly, Dr. Ogbachi was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the FMC Yenagoa. Family members described a harrowing scene as medical experts attempted to revive her while her oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels plummeted.
"We watched her struggling to live, we watched her gasping for breath," Sintei shared. "The SpO2 machine began reading downwards from 70 to 50 and then to zero. My beloved sister died at exactly 2:45 AM. A generation has been lost."
Until her passing, Dr. Ogbachi was a respected member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and an alumna of Niger Delta University. Her colleagues describe her as a "fighter to the end" and a brilliant professional who was deeply committed to her patients.
The tragedy has reignited urgent discussions regarding maternal mortality in Nigeria, highlighting that even those within the medical profession are not exempt from the risks of high-stakes pregnancies.
The Sintei and Ogbachi families have expressed their profound gratitude for the outpouring of support from across the country. While the triplets are reported to be in stable condition, the local community and professional associations are rallying to provide assistance for their long-term care.
A candlelight vigil in her honor is expected to be organized by the NMA Bayelsa State branch later this week to celebrate the life of a doctor who gave her life while bringing three new ones into the world.
