The US Is No Longer the Leader: Germany Becomes the Largest Ammunition Producer in the World

In a significant shift in global military dynamics, Germany has surpassed the United States to become the leading ammunition producer worldwide. This development has been largely orchestrated by the German defense manufacturer Rheinmetall, which has significantly enhanced its production capabilities amidst a growing demand for military supplies.

Rheinmetall's CEO, Armin Papperger, has announced that the company has increased its production of various types of military ammunition to unprecedented levels. For instance, artillery shell production has skyrocketed from 70,000 rounds annually to approximately 1.1 million, while the output of medium-caliber ammunition has surged from 800,000 to 4 million rounds per year. Additionally, the company has expanded its capacity for military truck production from 600 to 4,500 vehicles annually.

This expansion of production is a direct response to increased defense budgets across Europe, driven by the ongoing war in Ukraine and the notable reduction in US military support. Many European nations are ramping up their military spending, with allocations surpassing €400 billion in 2026 alone, a move seen as essential to bolster defense capabilities as regional threats grow.

Rheinmetall's production capacity has been backed by a significant increase in personnel. The company received an influx of applications, with 350,000 candidates, of which 250,000 are from Germany, mainly due to the burgeoning prospects in the defense sector.

Furthermore, Germany's defense industry is set to evolve, potentially replacing jobs lost in other sectors, particularly the automotive industry. This transition reflects a broader commitment to military modernization and an acknowledgment of Russia as a primary threat, as outlined in Germany’s new military strategy.

With these changes, Germany is not only enhancing its ammunition production but is also positioning itself as a linchpin in Europe’s defense strategy, potentially reshaping military cooperation across the continent.
