Alfiya Zuckerman (39), Ruben Tamrazian (26), and Vahe Muradkhanyan (32), all from the Los Angeles area, were sentenced for their participation in an elaborate insurance fraud scheme that involved staging bear attacks on high-end vehicles. The trio pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud, receiving sentences of 180 days in jail, to be served on weekends, along with two years of supervised probation. They were also ordered to pay restitution amounting to nearly $108,000 collectively.
This case emerged from the California Department of Insurance's Operation Bear Claw, which began investigating suspicious insurance claims involving a supposed bear attack on January 28, 2024. The suspects reported that a bear had entered their 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, causing interior damage, and submitted video evidence. However, investigators determined that the "bear" in the footage was, in fact, a person dressed in a bear costume.
The investigation revealed two additional fraudulent claims linked to other luxury vehicles, including a 2015 Mercedes G63 AMG and a 2022 Mercedes E350, all claiming damages from the same incident in Lake Arrowhead.
A biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that the footage showcased a human in a bear suit. Following a search warrant, authorities recovered the costume from the defendants’ residence. Overall, the fraudulent claims are estimated to have defrauded the insurance companies of $141,839.
A fourth suspect, Ararat Chirkinian (39), is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing later this year. Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara stated that this case underscores the seriousness of insurance fraud, which ultimately drives up costs for consumers.
The bizarre nature of the scam has attracted public interest, illustrating that even the most outlandish schemes can be investigated and prosecuted effectively.
