MANILA, Philippines — Police authorities in Tondo have arrested a 22-year-old man and two of his companions after they were caught allegedly stealing electrical cables from a parked heavy vehicle. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 30, 2026, highlights ongoing concerns regarding petty theft and vandalism in the city's industrial zones.
The suspects were apprehended following a tip-off from a vigilant community member who noticed suspicious activity near a logistics yard where several trucks were stationed.
The primary suspect, a 22-year-old male, was caught alongside two other male accomplices while the trio reportedly used heavy-duty wire cutters to strip valuable copper cables from the chassis of a parked long-haul truck. Officers from the Manila Police District (MPD) responded to the scene, catching the suspects in the act of hauling the stolen materials away.
Investigators believe the motive behind the theft was the high resale value of copper in the local scrap metal market.
"These types of thefts don't just cost the owners money for repairs; they disable essential logistics vehicles that deliver food and supplies to the city," noted a spokesperson for the local precinct.
The three suspects are currently being held at the Tondo Police Station. They face charges of Qualified Theft and Malicious Mischief.
Police have recovered several meters of electrical cabling and the tools used in the commission of the crime. Authorities are also investigating whether the group is linked to a series of similar cable thefts reported in the Port Area and neighboring districts over the past month.
Truck owners in the area have been advised to park in well-lit, secure facilities and to consider installing anti-tamper shields on exposed electrical components to deter future attempts.
