GENERAL TRIAS CITY, CAVITE, Philippines — A massive fire erupted on Thursday, May 7, 2026 in Barangay Manggahan, as a large pile of garbage in a vacant lot went up in flames. The incident sent thick, black smoke billowing over the residential area, prompting an immediate response from local fire departments.

The blaze broke out during the day, rapidly consuming a significant accumulation of waste materials left in an open, undeveloped lot. Firefighters were alerted to the scene by residents reporting the smell of burning plastic and visible flames rising from the heap.

Fanned by dry conditions, the fire spread quickly across the waste pile, complicating initial efforts to contain the perimeter. Local residents expressed deep concern regarding air quality as the burning debris produced a toxic haze that lingered over nearby homes.

General Trias fire crews arrived on the scene to battle the blaze, focusing on preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent properties or the thick vegetation surrounding the lot. Water tankers were deployed to douse the deep-seated fire within the rubbish pile, while traffic in the immediate vicinity of Brgy. Manggahan was briefly rerouted to allow fire trucks unobstructed access.

Following the knockdown of the main flames, crews remained on-site to conduct "mopping up" operations, ensuring no buried hot spots remained that could cause the waste to reignite.

While the exact cause of the fire is still being determined, the incident has highlighted the dangers of illegal dumping and waste accumulation in vacant urban spaces.
