MEERUT, UTTAR PRADESH — In a major blow to the regional "food mafia," the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) conducted a midnight raid on a manufacturing unit in Meerut, seizing more than 2,800 kg of adulterated or "chemical" paneer. The operation has sparked a massive health scare across Western Uttar Pradesh as authorities reveal the toxic ingredients used to produce the counterfeit dairy staple.
Acting on a confidential tip-off, a special task force stormed the facility located on the outskirts of the city, discovering a large-scale industrial operation dedicated to turning cheap chemicals into a product that mimics the look and texture of fresh cottage cheese.
The raid revealed a disturbing, laboratory-style setup where "chemical paneer" was manufactured using a hazardous cocktail of non-dairy substances. Preliminary on-site tests detected sulphuric acid used for rapid curdling, alongside synthetic milk concocted from urea and detergents. To mimic the texture and appearance of authentic dairy, producers added palm oil and vegetable fats for a realistic "mouthfeel," while starch and blanched flour were used to provide bulk and a deceptive snowy white finish.
"This wasn't a dairy farm; it was a chemical plant," said an FSDA official. "The conditions were unhygienic, and the substances being used are known to cause severe gastrointestinal distress, kidney damage, and long-term carcinogenic effects."
The 2,800 kg haul is believed to be just a fraction of what the unit produced daily. Investigators found ledgers indicating that this "chemical paneer" was being supplied to local dhabas, marriage halls, and small-scale retailers at nearly half the price of genuine dairy products.
With the wedding season in full swing, authorities fear that thousands of unsuspecting consumers may have already ingested the toxic product.
The owner of the unit and four workers were detained during the raid. The facility has been sealed, and samples have been sent to a state laboratory for a comprehensive forensic analysis. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, the perpetrators could face life imprisonment if the adulteration is proven to be "life-threatening."
District authorities have now ordered a city-wide inspection of all cold storage facilities and dairy suppliers. "We are sending a clear message: those playing with the lives of citizens for a few rupees of profit will not be spared," the District Magistrate stated.
The FSDA has issued a public advisory, urging consumer to be wary of paneer that appears unnaturally white, has a rubbery texture, or emits a faint chemical odor when boiled. Residents are encouraged to buy only from licensed vendors and to report any suspicious pricing that seems "too good to be true."
As the investigation expands, police are now tracing the supply chain to identify the distributors who helped funnel this toxic harvest into the kitchens of Meerut and beyond.
