Tragedy at Supanova: 20-Year-Old Killed as Car Mounts Kerb Outside Comic Con

MELBOURNE, Australia — A weekend meant for celebration and pop-culture fandom turned into a scene of "unspeakable tragedy" when a car ploughed into a group of young friends leaving the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event on Saturday afternoon, April 18, 2026. A 20-year-old man from Keysborough was killed, and another 20-year-old was left fighting for his life after a vehicle mounted the kerb outside the Melbourne Showgrounds.

The incident occurred just before 5:00 PM on Langs Road in Ascot Vale. According to Victoria Police, a grey Toyota sedan suddenly veered across a lane and mounted the footpath, travelling approximately 120 meters through a confined area of trees and power poles before finally coming to a halt.

The group of three friends was walking home from the convention when the vehicle struck them from behind. One young man died at the scene despite the efforts of bystanders, including an off-duty paramedic who provided immediate first aid.

A second victim was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical lower-body injuries, where he remains in a stable but serious condition. A third member of the group narrowly escaped physical injury but was treated for severe trauma.

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Awer Dau of Werribee, was detained at the scene by an off-duty police officer and a member of the public after he allegedly attempted to flee. Police have since confirmed that Dau was unlicensed, holding only a learner’s permit at the time of the crash.

On Sunday, Dau appeared via video link in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court and was charged with culpable and dangerous driving causing death.

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy described the vehicle’s path as "extremely unusual," noting that the car travelled a significant distance along a footpath that was not in the direction of the driver's original travel. Prosecutors have been granted 16 weeks to compile evidence, which will include mechanical reports, toxicology results, and CCTV footage.

The organizers of Supanova expressed their deep distress over the incident, which occurred literally on their "doorstep." On Sunday, thousands of attendees paused for a minute’s silence at midday to honor the victims.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan spoke out on the tragedy, stating, "This is a tragic incident that should never have happened. My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the individual who has been tragically killed."

The fatal crash has reignited urgent discussions regarding pedestrian safety at the Melbourne Showgrounds, with critics questioning the adequacy of current physical barriers on Langs Road during peak convention hours.

In response, calls have grown for more robust traffic management strategies, including temporary road closures or significantly reduced speed limits. These measures are being proposed to better protect the thousands of fans transitioning between the venue and local transport hubs during large-scale events. The suspect has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court in September.
