Tragedy from the Skies: Respected Police Inspector Struck Down by Lightning in Borno

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – The Borno State Police Command is in a state of mourning following a freak weather event that claimed the life of a highly regarded officer. Inspector Abdulkadir Garba, affectionately known to his colleagues and the public as "Buratai," was killed by a lightning strike on Thursday afternoon.

The tragedy occurred at approximately 2:19 p.m.local time on May 7, 2026, within the vicinity of the command headquarters in Maiduguri. Inspector Garba was reportedly performing his duties, coordinating vehicle parking opposite the headquarters, as weather conditions began to rapidly deteriorate.

According to official reports, Inspector Garba and a senior colleague, ASP Wazani Adamu, were attempting to find shelter from intensifying winds and rain when a massive lightning bolt struck the area. Inspector Garba bore the brunt of the strike, sustaining partial burns that proved fatal, while ASP Adamu was also affected but miraculously survived the ordeal.

The atmosphere at the Borno Command has been described as heavy with grief. "Buratai" was not just a name but a symbol of tireless service within the force.

"Inspector Garba was the embodiment of passion for the job," shared a fellow officer. "He was always on the front lines of service, even in the rain. To lose him to a bolt from the sky while he was literally on duty is a heartbreak we can’t quite put into words."

Police spokespeople confirmed the details of the incident, noting that Inspector Garba died in the line of duty. Tributes have since begun pouring in from both the police hierarchy and the local community, recognizing his years of dedicated service to the safety of Maiduguri.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by severe weather in the region as the rainy season commences. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in accordance with family wishes and police tradition.
