Tragedy in Cairo: Nine Dead as Fire Rips Through Clothing Factory Beneath Residential Tower

CAIRO, Egypt — A massive fire tore through an unlicensed clothing factory and warehouse located within a 12-story residential building in Cairo's Al-Zaitoun district, leaving nine people dead and at least nine others injured. The blaze, which ignited on Tuesday afternoon of March 31, 2026, trapped workers and residents alike as thick smoke billowed through the upper floors of the high-rise.

The fire reportedly broke out in the basement and ground floor levels, which housed a textile manufacturing facility alongside significant quantities of highly flammable fabric storage. In response, Cairo’s Civil Protection forces deployed six fire engines and ten ambulances to the scene on Saraya El-Qobba Street, where firefighters battled the inferno for several hours before finally bringing it under control in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Authorities have confirmed nine fatalities, while five of the nine injured individuals remain in critical condition at local hospitals. As the fire raged, utility teams disconnected electricity and gas lines to the entire block to prevent secondary explosions, allowing cooling operations to continue safely throughout Wednesday.

Following an immediate preliminary inquiry, police arrested three brothers who owned and operated the facility. "Initial investigations reveal that the factory was operating without a legal license and completely lacked necessary safety and fire protection systems," a security source stated.

The Public Prosecution has launched a full-scale investigation, requesting forensic reports to determine the exact cause of death for the victims. Additionally, an urgent engineering committee has been formed to assess the structural integrity of the 12-story building to determine if it remains safe for residents to return.

This latest tragedy has reignited a fierce national debate in Egypt regarding industrial safety and the proliferation of unlicensed "shadow" factories in residential areas. Critics argue that a lack of oversight and the integration of industrial workspaces into crowded housing blocks continue to pose a lethal risk to the public.

As the cooling operations conclude and the smoke clears over Al-Zaitoun, the families of the victims are calling for stricter enforcement of building codes to ensure that such a "workspace deathtrap" never claims lives again.
