BANAUE, IFUGAO, Philippines – A weekend trip turned into a tragedy when a motorcycle carrying two individuals overshot a sharp curve and plummeted into a deep ravine in the mountainous province of Ifugao. The accident, which occurred late on Monday afternoon, April 13, 2026, resulted in the immediate death of the rider, while a companion remains in critical condition.

Local authorities and volunteer rescue teams spent several hours navigating the steep, rugged terrain to reach the victims and retrieve the wreckage from the bottom of the gorge.

The accident took place along a notorious stretch of the national highway known for its dense fog and hairpin turns. According to initial police reports, the motorcycle was traversing a downward slope when the rider appeared to lose control of the vehicle.

Witnesses reported seeing the motorcycle strike a low concrete barrier before vaulting over the edge and falling approximately 100 feet into the ravine. Local residents who witnessed the crash immediately alerted the Ifugao Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO). In response, rescue teams utilized ropes and stretchers to descend the treacherous slope and reach the victims. Upon reaching the site, responders confirmed that the rider had succumbed to severe head and chest injuries sustained during the fall.

The rider was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities are currently notifying the next of kin before releasing their identity to the public. The back-rider survived the initial impact and was found conscious, though they are suffering from multiple fractures and serious internal injuries. The survivor was stabilized at the scene before being hoisted back to the roadway and rushed to the nearest district hospital. Due to the severity of the injuries, a transfer to a more advanced trauma center in a neighboring province is currently being arranged.

The Ifugao police have launched an investigation to determine whether the crash was caused by mechanical failure, human error, or poor road conditions.

"This particular sector of the highway is extremely challenging, especially for those unfamiliar with the terrain," stated a local traffic investigator. "Loose gravel and sudden mists can turn a routine ride into a life-threatening situation in seconds."

Motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the Cordillera administrative region, particularly during the late afternoon hours when visibility often drops significantly.
