Tragedy in Kano: Out-of-Control Trailer Leaves Trail of Destruction, 2 Dead and 20 Injured

KANO, NIGERIA – A routine Saturday morning journey turned into a scene of carnage at the Wudil T-Junction along the Maiduguri Road, as an overloaded trailer lost control and plowed into a stationary vehicle, leaving two people dead and 20 others fighting for their lives.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. local time on April 18, 2026, involved a DAF trailer transporting a volatile mix of commercial goods, livestock, and dozens of human passengers.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the trailer was traveling from the bustling Wudil Market, en route to Lagos State. As the vehicle approached the notorious T-junction, witness accounts suggest it was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Preliminary investigations suggest the tragedy began when the driver was unable to decelerate while approaching the interchange, leading to a complete loss of control. The massive trailer veered off its path and lost stability, violently crashing into a vehicle parked by the roadside. The impact was devastating, scattering goods and livestock across the highway and leaving several passengers trapped beneath the mangled wreckage.

Emergency responders from the FRSC arrived at the scene within ten minutes of the distress call to provide aid to the 30 adult males on board the trailer. Tragically, the accident resulted in two fatalities; while 20 others sustained various injuries and were rushed for medical attention. Only eight passengers managed to escape the wreckage unhurt.

The injured victims were rushed to Wudil General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for varying degrees of trauma.

Kano State Sector Commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawan, expressed deep frustration over the recurring nature of such tragedies. He pointed directly to the "dangerous practice" of using trailers designed for cargo to transport human beings.

"Over-speeding and overloading remain the leading causes of road crashes in this region," Muhammed-Lawan stated. "We have repeatedly warned transport operators to desist from conveying passengers in trailers meant for goods and livestock. It is a recipe for disaster."

The command has once again urged the public to avoid boarding such unsafe vehicles and has vowed to tighten enforcement along the busy Wudil-Maiduguri corridor to prevent further loss of life.
