Tragedy in Keyi Panyor: Junior Engineer Killed as Massive Landslide Crushes SUV

POTIN, ARUNACHAL PRADESH — A devastating landslide triggered by relentless torrential rains claimed the life of a Junior Engineer on Saturday morning, April 25, 2026 in the Potin area of Keyi Panyor district. The victim was traveling in his SUV when a massive boulder, dislodged from the rain-soaked slopes above, crashed directly onto the vehicle, killing him on the spot.

The incident occurred amidst a wave of severe weather conditions that have battered Arunachal Pradesh over the last 48 hours, causing widespread disruption to road networks and telecommunications.

According to eyewitnesses and local authorities, the Junior Engineer—whose identity is being withheld pending final notification of kin—was navigating the treacherous Potin stretch of the highway when the landslide struck. The force of the falling rock was so immense that it completely flattened the cabin of the SUV, leaving no room for escape.

Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the scene, but the victim had already succumbed to the catastrophic impact. It took several hours for recovery teams to extricate the body from the mangled wreckage using heavy machinery.

This tragedy follows a series of warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regarding intensified monsoon-like activity across the Northeast. Keyi Panyor and surrounding districts have been particularly vulnerable due to unstable terrain.

The current storm has caused significant disruption, with the highway at Potin remaining blocked and severing essential supply routes to several upstream circles. Reports of infrastructure damage are mounting, including secondary landslides near Param Putu and the failure of a suspension bridge over the Panyor River.

In response, Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta has ordered an immediate safety assessment of the highway and issued an urgent advisory for citizens to avoid all non-essential travel. Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his deep condolences to the family of the deceased officer, noting the dedication of state engineers who often work in these high-risk zones to maintain critical infrastructure.

"It is a somber reminder of the challenges our frontline officers face during natural calamities. Our thoughts are with the bereaved family," a government spokesperson stated.

The state government has announced that the standard ex-gratia relief of ₹4 lakh will be processed immediately for the next of kin.
