Tragedy in the Wild: Rogue Elephant Attacks Innayin Community, Sparking Urgent Search

INNAYIN, Nigeria — A quiet Thursday afternoon in the Innayin community of Oyo State turned into a scene of terror when a wild elephant emerged from the bush, launching a series of attacks that left one man dead and another missing. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Oke Ogun geopolitical zone, prompting an emergency response from state authorities and local hunters.

The attack occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on April 23, 2026. Residents described the sudden appearance of the massive animal as it strayed into the community area. Among those caught in the elephant's path was Ibrahim Tijani, 45, who was fatally trampled.

Police operatives, alongside local vigilantes and hunters, mobilized quickly after receiving distress calls. Their search led to the discovery of Tijani’s lifeless body in a nearby thicket, bearing severe injuries consistent with a violent animal encounter. His remains have since been evacuated to the General Hospital in Iwere-Ile for medical examination.

As the community reels from the confirmed fatality, a second tragedy looms. Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, 50, has been declared missing after a reported encounter with the same elephant. Search parties have fanned out into the surrounding bushland, but as of Saturday morning, Bingin remains unaccounted for.

"We are working around the clock," said a spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command. "Our priority is locating Alhaji Bingin and ensuring no further lives are lost to this animal."

The National Park Service has been alerted to provide expert guidance on managing the situation. Preliminary reports from wildlife officials suggest the elephant may have strayed from a known migratory route.

Officials attribute the surge in dangerous encounters to farming expansion into traditional corridors and elephant retaliatory behavior. Experts warn that these highly intelligent animals can become aggressive if they feel threatened or have suffered past harassment due to habitat encroachment.

Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga has urged residents of Innayin and surrounding villages to remain calm but vigilant. A strict warning has been issued for members of the public to avoid the affected bush areas until the elephant is successfully tracked and redirected.

The incident highlights the growing tension of human-wildlife conflict in Nigeria's forest fringes—a delicate balance between protecting endangered species and ensuring the safety of those living on the front lines of the wild.
