Tragedy on the Highlands: 19 Dead as Passenger Bus Overturns on Udhampur Highway

UDHAMPUR, JAMMU & KASHMIR – In one of the deadliest road accidents in the region this year, at least 19 passengers were killed and over 25 others injured when a speeding bus overturned on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) near Battal Ballian in Udhampur district early on Monday morning, April 20, 2026.

The private luxury bus, which was en route from Srinagar to Jammu, reportedly lost control while negotiating a sharp, downhill curve around 4:30 a.m. local time. According to initial police reports, the vehicle struck a concrete median before flipping multiple times and coming to a rest on its side, partially crushing several passengers beneath the roof.

The impact was so severe that local residents, who were the first to arrive at the scene, had to use makeshift tools to break through the bus windows and retrieve those trapped inside the mangled wreckage.

A massive rescue effort involving the J&K Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Army personnel was launched shortly after the alarm was raised.

"It was a horrific scene. The darkness and the twisted metal made it extremely difficult to reach the victims in the center of the bus," said an SDRF responder. "We had to utilize hydraulic cutters to stabilize the vehicle before extracting the final survivors."

While a formal inquiry has been ordered by the Divisional Commissioner, traffic authorities have identified excessive speed, driver fatigue, and potential mechanical failure as primary contributing factors. Survivors reported that the driver was allegedly speeding to compensate for an earlier delay, while investigators believe he may have succumbed to exhaustion during the dangerous predawn "fatigue window."

Furthermore, a detailed inspection of the vehicle's brake assembly is underway, as forensic evidence from skid marks at the scene appears inconsistent with standard emergency braking maneuvers, suggesting a possible technical malfunction prior to the rollover.

The Udhampur stretch of the NH-44, while significantly improved in recent years, remains a high-risk corridor due to its steep gradients and unpredictable weather. This tragedy has sparked renewed calls for the installation of high-impact crash barriers and mandatory "rest-stop" logs for long-haul passenger drivers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families, with the LG's office announcing an ex-gratia relief of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
