IKAMATUA – A somber atmosphere has settled over the Grey District following the recovery of a body from the Otututu (Rough) River on Friday, May 8, 2026. The discovery concludes a concentrated search effort that began after an overturned tractor was spotted submerged in the water.
Emergency services were alerted early on Wednesday morning when a passerby noticed the wheels of an upturned tractor breaching the surface of the river, located just outside the township of Ikamatua.
Local police, alongside Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, arrived on the scene shortly after. Due to recent weather conditions and the river's namesake "rough" currents, specialized recovery equipment was required to stabilize the machinery and survey the surrounding area.
After several hours of searching downstream, authorities confirmed that a body had been located and recovered. While formal identification is still underway, the incident is believed to be a localized farm accident.
The West Coast farming community is tight-knit, and news of the tragedy has traveled quickly.
"These are the days that hit our rural communities the hardest," said one local resident. "The river is a lifeline for our farms, but it can turn dangerous in an instant. Our hearts go out to the family involved."
WorkSafe New Zealand has been notified as part of the standard procedure for farm-related fatalities. Police investigations are currently underway to determine why the tractor entered the water, specifically examining potential mechanical failures, the impact of recent rainfall on riverbank stability, and the exact timeline of when the vehicle left the track.
The death has been referred to the Coroner. Police have expressed their gratitude to the volunteers and locals who assisted in the recovery efforts during difficult conditions.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the bereaved family and a community reeling from the loss of one of its own.
