After being evacuated from the MV Hondius in the Canary Islands, eighteen US passengers landed in the United States on May 10, 2026. This cruise ship has been linked to a hantavirus outbreak, which has resulted in at least three fatalities. Upon arrival at Omaha, Nebraska, passengers were assessed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, recognized as the nation's only federally funded quarantine unit for high-consequence infectious diseases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low. Of the returned passengers, 16 are staying in Nebraska, and 2 have been quarantined in Georgia, with one of those individuals displaying symptoms. Health officials have stated that even though the situation is serious, the likelihood of widespread transmission is minimal, as human-to-human transmission of this specific strain of hantavirus is particularly rare.

While in quarantine, the Nebraska passengers will undergo health assessments for a 42-day monitoring period. This assessment protocol is necessary to track any potential symptoms that could arise from exposure to the virus. Although one passenger tested positive for hantavirus, they are currently asymptomatic and under biocontainment.

Furthermore, seven additional passengers who had left the cruise ship prior to the evacuation are being monitored across various states, including California, Texas, and Virginia. Local health departments are keeping tabs on them to ensure safety and prompt medical response if required.

Public health authorities stress the importance of caution, highlighting that while hantavirus can be deadly, it is generally not very contagious between humans. The CDC confirmed that passengers would be monitored regularly, and if any illness were to develop during the observation period, those individuals would be isolated and treated appropriately.

As passengers settle into their quarantine locations, they express relief at being home. However, many remain anxious about potential health issues.
