NEW DELHI — A festive household in Northeast Delhi’s Indira Vihar was plunged into chaos on Wednesday morning, April 15, 2026 after a 21-year-old bride-to-be was targeted in a horrific acid attack just four days before her wedding. The victim is currently in critical condition at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, where doctors are battling to save her sight and stabilize severe burns to her face and upper body.

The attack occurred around 9:00 AM while the victim was reportedly preparing for her mehendi (henna) ceremony. According to eyewitnesses and family members, a woman barged into the home and doused the victim with a corrosive substance before fleeing the scene.

The victim, described by neighbors as a "bright student" and one of six siblings, was scheduled to be married this Sunday, April 19. Instead of finalizing wedding preparations, her family is now keeping a grim vigil outside the intensive care unit.

Gokalpuri Police acted swiftly, apprehending a 26-year-old woman identified only as the primary suspect later Wednesday afternoon. Preliminary investigations suggest the motive was rooted in a past relationship.

"The accused was reportedly in a relationship with the victim's prospective groom and was vehemently opposed to the union," a senior police officer stated. "Driven by jealousy, she allegedly orchestrated the attack to permanently stop the wedding."

The incident has sparked intense anger in the local community, with residents demanding the strictest possible punishment for the perpetrator. Forensic teams have visited the site to collect evidence, and police are currently verifying the source of the acid to determine if additional charges for the illegal sale of chemicals will be filed.

The suspect has been charged under Section 124(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid.
