‘You’re Lucky You’re Not Soap Bars’: Jews Forced to Leave Rally Marking WWII End in Italy

several Jewish marchers were forcibly removed from a rally in Milan, Italy, commemorating the anniversary of the country's liberation from Nazi occupation. The event saw hundreds participate but took a troubling turn as a group of around 100 pro-Palestinian activists confronted those representing the Jewish Brigade, a historical unit of Jewish volunteers who fought against Nazi Germany during World War II.

As tensions escalated, participants carrying banners featuring the Jewish Brigade were not only blocked from advancing but also subjected to a torrent of antisemitic abuse. Eyewitnesses reported shouts of “You’re lucky you’re not soap bars,” referencing the unproven claim that the Nazis produced soap from the remains of concentration camp victims. Other chants included “Zionists out of Milan” and “Long live Hitler,” further amplifying the distressing atmosphere of the event.

Among those present was Emanuele Fiano, a former MP and son of an Auschwitz survivor, who expressed shock at being ejected from a rally meant to celebrate freedom. He noted, “We were kicked out... the Jewish Brigade was an active part of the liberation of Italy, and today they were taken hostage by people who prohibited them from participating in a peaceful demonstration.”

The Jewish Brigade, which consisted of approximately 5,000 Jewish soldiers, played a significant role in the liberation of parts of Italy during the war. In recent years, their participation in such commemorative events has frequently faced opposition from various factions.

The mayor of Milan and the National Association Partisans of Italy (ANPI) suggested that tensions arose because Jewish representatives brought Israeli flags, which were deemed inappropriate for the occasion. ANPI president Gianfranco Pagliarulo criticized the Jewish community for not adhering to a supposed agreement not to display such symbols.

In contrast, representatives from the Jewish community, including Walker Meghnagi, president of Milan's Jewish community, countered that there had been no prior ban on Israeli flags and condemned the ANPI for its failure to maintain a neutral and respectful celebrations atmosphere.

The incident has reignited debates over Italy's growing issues with antisemitism, exacerbated by rising tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Prime Minister Georgia Meloni condemned the protests against the Jewish Brigade and mentioned that public sentiments toward Israel may have contributed to a dangerous justification for violence against Jewish individuals.

As the discourse around this incident evolves, it highlights the deepening complexities of identity and communal relations in modern Italy amid historical recollections of liberation and survival.
