Tragedy in Budgam: Woman Killed, Man Critically Injured in Charar-i-Sharief Road Accident

BUDGAM, KASHMIR — A Sunday morning journey turned into a tragedy in Central Kashmir's Budgam district after a vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge near the historic town of Charar-i-Sharief. The accident, which occurred near the Zinpanchal area, resulted in the immediate death of a woman and left a man battling for his life.

According to local officials, the accident took place around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The driver of the private car reportedly lost control while navigating a sharp curve on the mountainous road leading toward the Charar-i-Sharief shrine. The vehicle veered off the asphalt, tumbling several hundred feet into a deep nallah (water channel) below.

Local residents were the first to reach the wreckage, launching a frantic rescue operation before police and medical teams arrived.

"The descent was so steep that the car was completely crushed," said a local volunteer who assisted in the recovery. "We found the woman already deceased, but the man was still breathing, though he was pinned under the dashboard."

The male survivor, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash, was carefully extracted and rushed to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Chadoora. Due to the severity of his head and internal injuries, he was later stabilized and referred to a specialized trauma facility in Srinagar for advanced treatment.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken formal cognizance of the incident. A case has been registered at the Charar-i-Sharief Police Station, and a preliminary investigation is underway to determine if the crash was caused by a mechanical failure, the slippery condition of the road, or human error.

"We are investigating all angles," a police official stated. "The road near Zinpanchal is notorious for its difficult terrain, especially during the morning hours when visibility can be low."

This latest mishap has reignited demands from the local community for improved safety barriers and clearer signage on the roads surrounding the Charar-i-Sharief shrine, which sees heavy pilgrim traffic. Residents have frequently petitioned the administration to widen the narrow stretches near Zinpanchal to prevent such "spillover" accidents.
