KYIV, May 6, 2026: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia has chosen to escalate the conflict rather than pursue peace, as efforts for a ceasefire collapse amidst renewed hostilities. His remarks come after Ukraine proposed a unilateral ceasefire to coincide with Russia's planned Victory Day celebrations on May 9. Instead, Russia has ramped up its military actions, launching over 100 drones against eastern and southern Ukraine.

Zelensky emphasized that Russia's ongoing attacks represent a blatant disregard for ceasefire proposals, saying, “Russia's choice is an obvious spurning of a ceasefire and of saving lives.” He noted that Ukraine had intended to reciprocate the proposed Russian ceasefire but feels compelled to respond in kind due to ongoing aggression.

The situation escalated further as Russian strikes killed nearly 30 Ukrainian civilians, prompting fears of potential Ukrainian retaliations during Russia's significant public events. “A full-scale war and the daily murdering of people are a bad time for public 'celebrations',” Zelensky said.
